Most American smoke alarms have two serious flaws: They go off while you're cooking and they're too slow at detecting a new and deadly type of fire. Good news, the new generation of smoke alarms has finally fixed these problems.
Update: June 6. Kidde just launched 9th gen alarms at the end of May. I've added them below my top recommendations.

MY TOP SMOKE ALARM RECOMMENDATIONS: USA
Photoelectric alarms are still best. I talk about why in my guide above. Before buying, be aware of your legal requirements: search "your city" + "smoke alarm laws". I've purchased or at least through friends got hands on and extensively researched each model. Reviews for First Alert are bad because these are newly launched. Their old models have excellent ratings: amzn.to/45nw3QU
1️⃣ First Alert SMCO100V-AC || Top Pick for Hardwired Homes
Covers all the bases for modern homes and building codes requiring hardwired and interconnected smoke alarms. Check by removing your alarm, see three wire attached? It's hardwired.
This model has a photoelectric sensor + CO detector which also covers all building codes in the US. Has voice alerts telling you where the fire is.
►► amzn.to/3Vg7u3z
⁍No Carbon Monoxide Version ►► amzn.to/45i5ug0
2️⃣ First Alert SMCO500V || Wireless Protection
If your home doesn't have hardwired smoke alarms, this alarm uses wireless signals to interconnect your alarms together. All done on the smoke alarm, no phone or app is used.
If your smoke alarms are solo flyers, interconnecting them is a HUGE improvement in safety as it allows distant fires to sound the closest alarm to you. The version with carbon monoxide is cheaper (as of June 8th) than the same version without one 🤷
►► amzn.to/45i5MU8
No CO Version: amzn.to/3V6Xycs
Note some states require 10-YEAR Sealed Battery in new alarms and this alarm DOES NOT QUALIFY: AZ, KY, LA, MD, NC, OH, OR, PA, TX (Houston), VT, WI. Some states exempt wireless alarms from this rule: CA, FL, IL, IN.
If you need a 10-year battery get this:
3️⃣FIRST ALERT || Top 10-YR Battery Pick
CO + Voice alerts + Photoelectric + 10YR Battery which keeps your alarm running, no more annoying battery changes which also saves you money long term.
►► amzn.to/3KCUlNb
⁍ No CO: amzn.to/3Vg7AYZ
4️⃣ Nest Protect 2nd Edition || Smart Home Connectivity
If you're interested in smart home functionality like remote notifications for fires this is the model for you. Plus it self tests so you no longer have to push a button. Keep in mind 10-YR rules for the battery version.
Uses an advanced dual spectrum infrared photoelectric sensor and humidity detection for better false vs real alarm differentiation.
►► Hardwired: geni.us/NestProtectWired
►► AA Battery: geni.us/NestProtectBattery
⭐ KIDDE ALARMS ⭐
Kidde launched their latest 9th gen alarms end of May. These are the superior alarm for smoke detection as it has a more stringent PU foam and cooking nuisance test. My concern is their track record for reliability as they've had several recalls over the last 10 years, including their 8th gen Trusense smoke alarm lineup. Read my guide for more details.
If my friends ask for a recommendation, I point them to First Alert. I believe in the engineering and reliability of the brand.
1️⃣ KIDDE 30CUA10-V || For Hardwired Homes
Hardwired, CO Detector, 10-year battery, and voice alerts. You can save some money with the AA battery model but the peace of mind is worth it.
►► amzn.to/3VykumD
⁍ Same Model, No CO Detection ►►amzn.to/3RjB0UO

Ours are definitely over 10 years old. Actually roughly 2 more years and they'll have been in this house since we bought it in 06.
Cool. You just gave me an excuse to rip the Americium out of my junk detectors. 😂
How does it compares to the dual sensors alarms from First Alert I wonder
Do not give long story just tell people what they have to use that is safe.
8:03 Look! We have a friendly visiter on the roof.
ITS FAKE WHEN HE OPENED THE OVAN ITS STARTED BUT HE USED TOWL AND IT STOP FAKEEEEEEEEEEE
10:29 just buy rwo and put them at the same place lol
Normal people: I’ll just install a smoke detector Fire alarm enthusiasts: I got a better idea…
Appreciate the video and the website. Was going to grab a dual sensor photoelectric ionization sensor but after reading your site I realized its not Gen 8. So looks like I'll just go with a Gen 8/9 photoelectric unit.
Thanks! Glad it was useful. There is one Gen 8 but I couldn't find it being sold. Also most people need a carbon monoxide detector and having that interconnected is incredibly important.
what if you simply use a hybrid ionization - photoelectric smoke alarm?
Im bout to send this to my black friend 😈
Absolutely crazy that these junk smoke alarms aren't banned already. Here in my country they are banned. Only photoelectric and thermal alarms are permitted.
It seems like you messed up the graphic on response times for smoke alarms. You say photoelectric is faster but the graphic shows that it takes longer. I noticed the mixup on the flaming test graphic as well. You must have switched the names on both.
Very good prodcution
8:04 great squirrel👍
Is anyone going to talk about those combo alarms that have BOTH photoelectric and ionization detectors in them? While they aren’t common, they do exist, and provide the benefits of both alarms. The photoelectric part keeps you safe during smoldering fires, while flaming fires are quickly detected by the ionization detector. It still suffers from false alarms, though, due to the older tech being used for the ionization part.
We have PE detectors. I just replaced them again today. They are only good for ten years. If you don’t replace them before they expire? The all start going off until you replace them.
Dude crap isn't hold, damn pagan.
Screw these little coffin cars all together lol, I sure wouldn't put my kids and Wifey in one, for one thing they are too small, there are 7 of us loL But the most dangerous thing to be in/on going down the road in other than a bike is a motorhome and they dont ever have crash safety tests in those, NEVER.
In my hometown a guy hit a guardrail, but it wasnt attached to the poles, so it went through his car but he survived by just a few cm, had he had a passenger however I dont even wanna think about the consequenses😳
3:07 transition
I horizontally flipped the shot from the 70s to make that happen
Cybertruck is going back in time it seems
It's surreal to see a video that shows me something I've known about for over a decade. I remember being a relatively young teenager and going to a free lunch for elderly citizens sponsored by the fire department, to educate older people on the importance of having the right kind of fire detectors. I went with my grandparents, and saw basically the same sort of research shown in this video. They recommended a classical fire alarm that was physically wound up, and had a plastic/wax stopper that melted at a specific temperature. I wonder how those types of alarms perform against the modern battery of tests in a wide range of different types of fires. This was at least over 15 years ago, so I'd be interested in how those types of alarms hold up against modern testing standards.
That Volvo had its engine and gearbox removed and no battery so active safety was disabled so it’s not a fair comparison
I’ve owned and had a pretty nasty single crashed in that car and I survived well
The smoke of Polyutheraine Foam is also more toxic than that of paper and wood.
A year or so ago when it was time to replace my detectors, I found dual models that have both sensor types in one package. So far I've had no issues with nuance alarms, so hopefully these will last many years. Might be an option for people who want to update now, but can't find any 8th gen units.
Optical detectors are the best. Mine are all dualies except the kitchen and garage, those are optical only
My smoke alarm says: "for best results hold directly over flame".
Your chart is incorrect in 11:30. You made it opposite.
And also mixed in 13:35 😅
Hey Tumexs, I got a lot of these comments. The graph is correct, it's an unusual way of talking about how useful an alarm is. The actual metric is ASET - Available Safe Egress Time, which is how long after the alarm goes off you have to get out before conditions become dangerous. It's a more accurate measure of how useful an alarm is in saving your life. It's also an indirect a measure of how fast each alarm is alarm is. Yes, this is confusing, I thought about different ways to represent the data and this is the simplified version although I should have went with "escape time".
I would like to see what's safer to drive a old fully loaded 80,000 lbs Peterbilt 379 vs the small car in a head on collision 😂
Talked about everything but the advancement "more the lack thereof" of the actual rubber and it's lifespan. There have been many improvements in rubber softness but no beans here either.
Finally a good sponsor
Hi Andrew, I enjoyed watching your video. Understanding the concept by reading a book is too difficult no matter how many books you read or images you see. Color images though are better. But understanding those concepts through video is much better. I found the video insightful. I have one doubt, it might be silly. I wanted to know how the tire's diameter affects the vehicle's performance. I will take the case of a scooter, a motorcycle, and a 3 wheeler tempo. The diameter of a scooter tire is smaller than a motorcycle tire but comparable to 3 wheeler tempo. I wanted to know what design consideration goes into the selection of Tire size. How do tire companies decide on the tire sizes?
Thanks for taking the time to write in! To be honest I don't know how that is chosen. It would be something I would Google, and it wouldn't be a satisfying answer I would give you.
@@Lam Thanks for your response. i tried google and chatgpt but could not get correct response. Anyways thanks
Good job, Andrew!
Motorbikes and bicicles: YOU are the crumple zone
welp they prob just made it cheaper by making it to a heat detector
I was in suspense up until the lorax scene 😂. A lot of those projects just looked like reinvented watersheds. Hopefully the Philadelphia model is proven successful because paving over everything like in tokyo is plain awful
Bought a 1024gb sandisk micro sd for my escort m2 dash cam, and this sucker will not format. Bought the biggest one thinking its the best, but it refuses to format through the app, not sure if I went with a smaller size if it would work better
Good material. I have totally unsafe car and i want to buy "new" one maybe even more dangerous ) Not because i want to die, but because, for my opinion, new cars are ugly boring trash ) But about actual euroncap and same usa regulation - more point now for the active safety. For potential prevent the accident. Lain assist, auto stop and more. Sound smart, but how i hate this systems )))
Oh wow, that's really really interesting Very cool indeed, I'm glad people take the time and money to research and test this stuff, and that we've got the technological advancement necessary to make these relatively affordable Very cool
is the last section sponsored?
we have defeated dwarnesim
Really good job Andrew. All you have exposed here is really vital information to know better where we are putting our lives.
at 7:38 you show that the entire trunk/rear of a SUV is a crumple zone - no. all of the interior of the cabin of a SUV is a passenger compartment. I am not aware of european manufacturers, that turn the inside of the cabin, esp of SUVs, into a crumple zone. the crumple zones are OUTSIDE the cabin, thats the point
191k sub
for my project im gonna need alot more smoke detectors
Fantastic jobs around the developed world vs critical damage in the rest of the world
Why nt put both sensors in one?
Well, the low-lying parts of town did get a flood a few years back, but if any water level reached my house 350ft above sea level, it would be the result of both polar ice caps melting, and the flooding would be the least of our problems.
Keeping the battery fresh makes a big difference with ionization false alarms - a weak battery triggers more easily. Also get an alarm with a hush button to quiet false alarms so you don't rip it off the ceiling to make it shut up. I've been using dual photoelectric/ionization sensor smoke alarms for over a decade - they've never been hard to find. You don't have to stick with whatever your landlord or homebuilder installed on the cheap, and the price difference per alarm is only $5 to $10.
